How the place works
Between Basel and Karlsruhe the Rhine is impounded, with locks and power stations, and the current varies strongly with the discharge. The fairway is narrow, the groyne fields alongside are off limits, and commercial traffic has priority here too.
What breaks there
Berthing damage at the lock waiting places and contact with groyne heads when a boat moves aside for traffic. At higher discharge, debris is added that collects above the weirs and comes through when they open.
What this means for your policy
Check whether your policy covers federal waterways with commercial traffic without restriction, and how high the liability limit is. Contact with a freighter costs many times the value of your own boat.
