How the place works
Both island groups lie in the track of the South Pacific cyclones, whose season runs from November to April. New Caledonia has a usable refuge in Nouméa; Vanuatu has none that would hold in a direct hit.
What breaks there
In season the berth decides everything. Out of season it is reefs and anchorages with coral bottom, plus volcanic ash that at times loads deck and systems in Vanuatu.
