How the place works
The passage between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula is some six hundred miles wide, and the circumpolar current pushes the whole water mass of the Southern Ocean through this gap. Gales are the rule, not the exception, and the water temperature is near freezing.
What breaks there
Structural damage and capsize are the real scenarios, and drift ice is added. At this water temperature what counts in an incident is not the value of the boat but the time to rescue.
